NSSLGlobal Unveils New Beam

NSSLGlobal unveils new beam to increase communication coverage in South East Asia's busy shipping routes

SatComs News, October 2011: Global satellite communications provider NSSLGlobal is announcing their latest milestone in increasing satellite communications coverage and reliability for the maritime industry. The new NSSLGlobal 'spot beam' on the SES NSS6 satellite at 95 East, is online today to support shipping in South East Asia.

The new beam, which will be supported from NSSLGlobal's Cyprus hub, will provide additional capacity as well as beam and hub redundancy for maritime users along the many busy shipping routes in the South East Asia area, including Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia. The beam will enhance NSSLGlobal's already extensive coverage in the area.

NSSLGlobal operates a fully global DVBS2-RCS Network, providing leading edge communications solutions. The addition of this new beam is part of NSSLGlobal's programme of continued technological investment in the service and reach of its network. All of which is aimed at providing customers with cost effective, high-speed and reliable communications solutions that meet their ever-increasing bandwidth demands.

Sally-Anne Ray, Chief Operating Officer at NSSLGlobal comments: "South East Asia is one of the busiest shipping regions on the planet and a key region for our customers. With the ever increasing bandwidth needs of customers it makes sense for NSSLGlobal to be able to increase our capacity as well as plan for the future. As NSSLGlobal continues to grow we anticipate the desires of customers will be focused on higher speed broadband connections, delivered over a world-class infrastructure and backed by superior support, and it is this requirement that we are committed to achieving"

       The RSS Discovery Case Study

Global satellite communications provider NSSLGlobal ensures that maritime customers receive solutions that cater for all their needs.

As the needs of a vessel and its crew grows, NSSLGlobal is showing that it can provide communications solutions which not only offer the reliability and consistency to match customers' commercial requirements, but that also cater for the personal use of the crew. The RSS Discovery has been fitted with NSSLGlobal's Cruise-IP VSAT service and a FleetBroadband system, ensuring connectivity wherever the vessel travels.

The RSS Discovery is supported by the National Marine Facilities (NMF) Sea Systems branch, based at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton (NOCS).

The NOCS is the national focus for oceanography in the UK, with a remit to achieve scientific excellence in its own right as one of the world's top five oceanography research institutions. NOCS's mission is a diverse one, ranging from managing the national research vessel fleet and other major facilities, to programmes of strategic research for the Natural Environment Research Council, and academic research and education in ocean and earth sciences in support of the University of Southampton's mission.

The RSS Discovery is a research vessel, based primarily in the Atlantic Ocean, and, whilst the vessel's communications needs are structured around the ship's work, in modern society the need for wider access to the internet, and other lines of communication is an integral factor in deciding the appropriate solution for a vessel; and, as we have seen across land and maritime sectors, the need for reliable broadband connectivity is ever increasing.

The ship employs the "all you can eat" Cruise-IP service, providing broadband coverage via NSSLGlobal's DVBS2-RCS network for a fixed monthly fee, across one of the most comprehensive Ku-Band coverage footprints in the world. Alongside the Cruise-IP system, the RSS Discovery also employs a FleetBroadband FB500 terminal as part of NSSLGlobal's Service Assurance capability, providing seamless operation should the vessel travel outside the Ku-Band footprint.

Antonio Gatti, the Master on-board the RSS Discovery, comments: "The connection is fantastic for our business needs; we now have fundamental business tools, such as live emails and constant connection to the on-shore office, which have made the business processes of the ship much faster and smoother, as well as the ability to engage in the ship's scientific mission as it happens as the broadband connection allows us to monitor equipment and respond to it in real time. We also provide the connection to all the cabins, allowing the crew personal connections; the ability for crew members to access the news, communicate with family and, of course, check the football scores has made a genuine difference to crew members and greatly improved the quality of life on-board the vessel."

Sally-Anne Ray, Commercial Director at NSSLGlobal: "At NSSLGlobal it's our aim to provide communications solutions which give the customer an assured service that is completely suited to their requirements.

As people rely more than ever on the communications links they have in the office or at home, it is important that we are able to provide these links to those whose workplaces are less accessible, without sacrificing the quality of service we are able to deliver. The RSS Discovery is a great example of NSSLGlobal's ability to provide a quality assured service that caters for more than the basic needs of the customer; the combination of Cruise-IP and FleetBroadband gives the best possible coverage guarantee, and the flexibility of the package means that the customer is able to offer their crew a service which will help to bridge the gap between home and the workplace when they are on board."

NSSLGlobal keeps Associated Press news rolling during Egyptian uprising

Satellite communications "only solution" when other media channels cut off by security forces during revolt

London, February, 2011: Satellite communications provider NSSLGlobal is today revealing the part it played in helping to keep the international news supplier the Associated Press (AP) communicating during the Egyptian uprising.

Having worked with the AP for almost a decade NSSLGlobal is well aware of how critical a robust communication solution is in times of crisis and how essential it is that as a trusted provider they are able to provide flexible options quickly, as circumstances in-country change, to ensure uninterrupted service to and from hotspots across the globe.

For 4 years NSSLGlobal has supplied its DVBS2-RCS broadband solution Broad-IP to the AP as an internet back-up in the Middle Eastern and African counties such as Egypt, to keep the multimedia news agency in touch and distributing news. A near global, satellite broadband system, Broad-IP delivers premium voice and data services of up to 4MB to users in areas where the local infrastructure is unreliable or as was the case in Egypt, completely shutdown.

During the Egyptian uprising, government security forces restricted the flow of news from Cairo and the rest of Egypt. To prevent protesters and news networks distributing news, landlines, mobile phone networks and the internet in Egypt were all cut off or disrupted. As a result the AP turned to their satellite communication links as the primary method for communicating information in and out of the country. Fortunately the AP's Broad-IP antenna was located discreetly on the roof of their building, allowing them to keep connected as the situation in Cairo worsened.

As well as enabling the news supplier to send live and packaged video, the AP also used the connection to transmit photographers' stills, written news copy by journalists and radio reports. AP staff also used the Broad-IP system to stay in touch with friends and family outside of Egypt via email, Facebook and Twitter, providing much needed reassurances of their safety.

To help manage this increased usage, NSSLGlobal twice increased the capacity of the Broad-IP connection; first to a dedicated 512/512kbps connection and then a short time later to a 4mbps/1mbps for both upload and download traffic. These package changes were made within hours of the Customer's request and required no manual intervention by the customer or additional hardware.

Steve Moyes, Regional Director Technology EMEA at AP said: "Reporting from the middle of a revolution is a stressful and difficult business. Journalists are taking great risks to put together news pieces and the last thing they want to worry about is whether that news piece can be technically broadcast back to the audience at home. Our satellite connection proved to be essential in maintaining our link to the outside world and NSSLGlobal were quick to respond to the demand for more capacity and greater support. Thanks to our relationship with NSSLGlobal, getting the story out of the country was one less thing for us to worry about."

Sally-Anne Ray, Commercial Director at NSSLGlobal Ltd said: "NSSLGlobal has a long history of working with media organisations around the world during times of natural disaster and political unrest and we are well aware that stable communications and the ability to react quickly to the needs of our customers on the ground is vital not just for business continuity but also to provide friends and family with much needed news about users' health and safety in the field. We are proud to have provided this enhanced service during such an intense period and believe that it shows NSSLGlobal's ongoing goal of providing not only world-class solutions and products but also unparalleled service support and customisation anywhere in the world, regardless of the local conditions."

New Cyprus hub gives NSSL & Telemar Scandinavia the most comprehensive
KU band service coverage in the world

Satellite communications providers NSSL and Telemar Scandinavia today announced the June extension of their acclaimed DVBS2-RCS broadband network, making them the most comprehensive KU band providers in the world. Stretching to new areas of the globe the coverage extensions are coupled with a unique beam handover capability, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity across the world's major sailing routes. This significant service addition is part of NSSL and Telemar Scandinavia's continuing investment in their respective CruiseIP and SeaCall services.

This investment means that for the very first time commercial shipping and leisure vessels travelling across numerous KU-Band coverage beams will be uninterrupted in their communications services. Although other operators may eventually be able to offer their customers similar coverage areas; it is the automatic beam handover capability which ensures seamless DVBS2 coverage without the need for hardware changes or significant manual intervention.

The new Cyprus hub means that customers will now be able to enjoy up to 4Mb download speeds across two new major maritime routes; the Indian Ocean region including the coasts of India, Thailand, China and the coasts of Australia, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea.

The news follows quickly on the heels of the additional Atlantic Ocean, coastlines of Africa & South American, and the North Pacific Ocean coverage which came into service during 2009 and early 2010 and ensure that NSSL and Telemar Scandinavia can offer its maritime customers near-global seamless coverage.

Sally-Anne Ray, Sales Director, NSSL, says: "Of course we are thrilled to have the most comprehensive coverage in the industry; however we did not make the investment for recognition or industry plaudits. The simple fact is that we make continuing investments into new coverage areas and additional functionality in order to exceed our customer's high expectations. All of which help to provide our respective customers with a high quality, seamless broadband service."

Lars Brödje, Managing Director, Telemar Scandinavia says: "The joint investment in extended network coverage and functionality emphasizes the long-term engagement and determination of both NSSL and Telemar to stay in the lead. It paves the way for the respective companies to individually strengthen their position on the growing KU band broadband market and to continue their respective development of broadband service portfolios meeting the ever growing demand for high capacity, high quality data and voice services at competitive rates."

Landmark signing as NSSL wins STASCo global broadband contract

State-of-the-art wireless broadband service helps crew members communicate at sea.

NSSL has won a major five year contract with Shell International Trading and Shipping Company Limited (STASCo) to provide wireless broadband service throughout the company's shipping fleet.

STASCo has commissioned NSSL to install their Cruise-IP broadband service along with an onboard wireless network throughout its 71 strong oil and LNG shipping fleet. This significant investment will provide on board high speed internet and voice services that allow crew members continuous contact with friends and family while at sea.

The installation of the Cruise IP equipment on the STASCo fleet has already started with a team of engineers flying around the world to deliver the roll-out. Such is the demand to be the next vessel to receive broadband, that NSSL has doubled its Cruise IP engineering resource in order to finish bringing broadband to the whole fleet by the end of 2010.

With the highest broadband speeds and NSSL'S end-to-end customer service will ensure that hundreds of crew members will be able to contact loved ones no matter what time of day or night from any corner of the globe. The always on 'broadband service' at sea provided by NSSL will allow the crew instant access to everything that they would usually do at home including on-line banking, e-mail, remote learning and even video conferencing. Bob Chewter, MD at NSSL commented:

"Being selected for this prestigious contract is a terrific win for NSSL. As a company we are extremely proud to have succeeded in the tendering process as we know there was fierce competition in both size and quality of those we were up against. We have worked with STASCo for many years, however never on this scale, so we look forward to an ongoing partnership with one of the largest corporations in the world today." NSSL's acclaimed Cruise IP broadband service uses the latest DVBS2-RCS technology to provide speeds up to 4Mb, extended near-global coverage and an always-on connectivity along with up to 4 simultaneous premium voice lines. Unlike many other competitive broadband services, Cruise-IP also provides a guaranteed quality of service, fully inclusive hardware and network support for the duration of the contract.

IsatPhone Pro is put through its paces and triumphs

Today NSSL, an official Distribution Partner for the innovative IsatPhone Pro, announces findings from their extensive testing of Inmarsat's forthcoming global handheld product.

Selected as a Distribution Partner for the IsatPhone Pro late last year, NSSL's dedicated team of engineers have spent the last four weeks putting the handset through its paces.

The IsatPhone Pro, which will be launched by Inmarsat later in June, gives users clear voice quality, a robust handset, reliable global coverage and a long battery life. On top of these, it is easy to use and will soon be available at a highly competitive price.

Although a bold claim, this seems to be the conclusion of a historically product agnostic NSSL team of engineers who have tested the prelaunch handset at their facility in the UK.

The NSSL team of engineers found the voice quality of the handset the most impressive feature, giving users clear reception in any situation. They even claimed that the outstanding clarity of voice calls far exceeded that of other handsets available on the market. Durability of the model also stood out from current handsets, as the team found its robust casing almost completely resistant to the elements. Bumps, scratches, even water does not effect the performance of the eagerly awaited sat phone.

With many hours of testing carried out over the past four weeks by a team of qualified experts across multiple geographic regions, the IsatPhone Pro was also found to offer the longest battery life available on the market - with up to 8 hours talk time and up to 100 hours on standby.

        Danielle Edwards of NSSL comments:

"It always makes our lives easier when products are truly resilient and after our evaluation of the IsatPhone Pro we couldn't be more certain that this is the case. We are thrilled to have been selected as a Distribution Partner for Inmarsat's first handset and we have already seen expansive interest from our loyal and demanding customer base."
