Computer Hosting

In a world where everybody expects their IT systems to work seamlessly, it is crucial that vessels are supported 24/7. It may be that the customer’s IT teams are occupied with daily operations and this is where our IT management service can assist. With our new virtualised environment within the SMART@ SEA appliance, we are now able to offer hosting and management of operating systems and applications within the SMART@SEA appliance.

The integration of applications into the managed platform, enables saving of both space and crew resource on-board. Additionally, the use of software based utilities allows OTA updates that would be difficult to achieve for on-board isolated hardware solutions.

Customers can opt for a range of managed IT solutions from NSSLGlobal including a state-of-the-art Unified Threat Management service, Windows Server solution as well as a managed anti-virus solution for clients onboard the vessel, all optimised to work efficiently over satellite.

Cyber Security

Shipping companies and owners need to be just as wary of cybersecurity as any other industry, with the increased digitalisation aboard vessels posing a significant threat.

We’re living in an increasingly connected world and as such these companies and owners are now treating their vessels like a mobile office, performing the most mundane of tasks and business-related actvities either on board or remotely via the HQ.

However, this opens up a whole host of vulnerabilities for the vessel and insider threat is a major cause for concern for the industry and something that shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Seafarers bring an average of three communication devices on board ships, but insecure personal devices, be it smartphones, laptops or tablets, can add additional vulnerability to the vessel’s IT system which is open not separated from the vessel’s business LAN.

Having said that, cybersecurity is not just about preventing hackers from gaining access to a ship’s system. It’s also about ensuring that the IT systems in place are robust and resilient and that appropriate reversionary modes are available in the event of a compromise.

Potential risks of a cyber attack on a vessel include:

  • he interruption of operations
  • Loss of business-sensitive information
  • Insurance cover – impact on premiums of lack of cybersecurity measures
  • Reputational damage
  • Loss of customer and / or industry concidence
  • Severe financial loss / penalties
  • Privacy impact – personal data protecton legislation will see companies eed for failing to secure employee information

The threat landscape is constantly evolving and with this in mind, ship management companies and operators need to approach cybersecurity in a holistic way.

NSSLGlobal offers a number of solutions that provide cybersecurity assurance to support your road to digitalisaton, freeing up your time to focus on the vessel priorities that are core to your business.

SmartTalk

The new integrated and cost effective SmartTalk PBX provides crew and officers with the opportunity to move from analogue phones to IP phones enabling better mobility for users on the vessel as well as calls within the vessel. This PBX solution reduces the implementation time and costs as the IP connectivity can be via existing network cables or i-Fi without the need to run additional analogue cabling. This also provides the ability to allow Officers and Crew Users to use analogue handsets or smartphones/tablets to make internal and external calls. Key features are congestion controlcall restrictions, hunt groups and inbound/outound routing.

Email

Our secure Email service provides compression and resilience over a high latency network. Customers can choose to use their own POP3/SMTP client, they can also utilise a bespoke email domain for vessel addresses, or use the SMART@SEA email domain. Email file size limits can also be set on each WAN connection to ensure bandwidth is managed effectively and that bill shock does not occur when not utilising the primary connection.

Premium Voice

VSAT IP@SEA and Cruise-IP customers can also enjoy NSSLGlobal’s low cost toll-quality premium voice service from just $0.25 per minute. Our service is distinguished from our competitors as we provide an additional 32 kbps dedicated CIR for each voice line over the satellite and this then terminates over the US PSTN rather than over the Internet. When calling the vessel we also offer over 50 different country codes to allow local calling rates to the vessel. Lastly we can split the phone lines into operational and crew lines if required which allows the crew to utilise NSSLGlobal’s crew cards at our special crew rates.

Service Assurance

For those customers with VSAT IP@SEA, Cruise-IP and FleetBroadband or Iridium Pilot with NSSLGlobal we also offer our Service Assurance package which ensures that in the event of your primary VSAT system going down, you can switch to your L-Band service for free.

They can be obtained via the ship’s shop that can purchase from NSSLGlobal, or the crew can purchase directly from NSSLGlobal via Pay Pal through the onboard SMART@SEA portal.

Accounting Authority

NSSLGlobal is one the largest Maritime Account Authorities in the world and a leading provider of Inmarsat C, Inmarsat B and Inmarsat Fleet services. The AA also acts as the billing entity for any MF or HF radio traffic passed to a shore side network. The group’s Accounting Authority codes are recognised by over 50 countries for their flag ships who have confidence in NSSLGlobal’s ability to deliver a first class service to all their vessels.
