NSSLGlobal launches its first cellular/VSAT hybrid system for maritime vessels

Cost-effective solution designed to complement NSSLGlobal’s maritime VSAT offering, automatically switching to 3G/4G when in range, improving performance and reducing costs

9 May 2017 — Award-winning VSAT provider NSSLGlobal today launches its first-ever hybrid cellular/VSAT solution for maritime vessels, the Marine Cellular System. This service will complement NSSLGlobal’s airtime VSAT offering, or other services such as FleetBroadband and Iridium Open Port, allowing accustomed to land services to transfer from satellite to mobile connectivity, while operating up to 25km offshore.

Through NSSLGlobal’s Marine Cellular System, maritime vessels can connect to robust, high-speed internet, with download speeds of up to 100 Mbit/s, for commercial and crew welfare broadband use. It is supported by a cellular roaming service, established through a major global cellular operator, and allows the customer to automatically transfer from satellite communications to 3G and 4G mobile connectivity as appropriate. The service helps customers to gain the most out of their onboard communication system when operating in coastal areas or waiting to get into harbour.

Henrik Christensen, Group Maritime Sales Director, NSSLGlobal commented: “NSSLGlobal constantly strives to innovate and create differentiated products and services that enable its customers to get the optimal connectivity they need at an affordable rate. This is the premise behind our new NSSLGlobal Marine Cellular System. With ‘constant connectivity’ an ever-increasing need for ship operations and crew welfare, we need to ensure we provide fast and flexible access to internet services. By giving our customers the option to switch between VSAT and 3G/4G mobile connectivity, they can now get high-speed internet at the most cost-effective rate.”

NSSLGlobal’s new 3G and 4G services will complement its popular maritime VSAT IP@SEA service — which combines an extensive Ku- and C-Band coverage with some of the fastest speeds in the industry. The service comprises six global teleports supporting 24 satellite beams and two network operation centres to achieve ‘always-on’ connectivity. NSSLGlobal’s experience, technical knowledge with a true 24×7 technical support service and an incountry service engineering capability, means it can provide a “one stop shop” for any company looking for the best service in the industry.

Along with this new service and its wholly owned VSAT network, NSSLGlobal also brings together best-in-class satellite solutions from key market providers such as Inmarsat, Thuraya and Iridium, to offer options across C-, L-, Ka- and Ku-Band networks.
